tiropita, souvlaki
and gyro. Under the

parade of the young
and the young at
heart dance to
traditional songs

drop in for a late
afternoon sweet.
Wander among the
vendors tent to find
imported Greek olive
oil, coffees,
traditional clothing
and jewelry.

will be held at the
American Legion East

Amagansett, a venue
that is readily

inaugural year
(2008), the East
Hampton Arts

Hampton's reputation
as a destination for
fine arts. This
event gives patrons

opportunity to view
and purchase some of
the most beautiful
and creative artwork
exhibited anywhere
in the U.S. This is
artwork produced by
the top artisans
around the country
and thus is artwork

Joan Osborne 8:00 pm
$100 general
admission / $115 VIP
admission
Singer Joan Osborne
was born on July 8,
1963, in the town of
Anchorage, KY, but
it wasn't until
relocating to New
York City in the
early '90s (to study
at N.Y.U.'s film
school) that she
began to take a
singing career
seriously after
singing Billie
Holiday's classic
"God Bless the
Child" at a local
bar's "open mic
night." In addition
to Holiday, Osborne
looked to such
legendary vocalists
as Etta James and
Ray Charles as role
models, as the
up-and-coming singer
decided not to cater
to major record
companies and formed
her own label,
Womanly Hips, which
resulted in such
releases as 1992's
in-concert Soul
Show, among others.
But eventually,
Osborne decided to
sign on with a major
label, Mercury,
which in turn issued
the singer's next
release, Relish, in
March of 1995. The
album proved to have
a long life, as
almost a year after
its initial release
the track "One of
Us" became a massive
MTV and radio smash,
camping out at the
number one spot on
the U.S. singles
chart for two weeks
and Relish
eventually racked up
sales of three
million copies.
Further tracks
("Right Hand Man"
and "St. Teresa")
failed to match the
success of Osborne's
first hit, but the
singer still managed
to connect with a
large and
appreciative
audience, especially
during touring as
part of the 1997
edition of Sarah
McLachlan's Lilith
Fair tour. Osborne
also received
numerous Grammy
nominations in both
1996 and 1997.
Producing a worthy
follow-up to Relish
proved to be a
time-consuming
challenge for
Osborne. Mercury
tried to buy some
time by issuing a
compilation release,
Early Recordings
(which collected the
early releases Live
at Delta '88 and
Blue Million Miles).
In the meantime,
Osborne focused on
supporting a few
groups/causes she
felt strongly about,
such as Rock the
Vote and Planned
Parenthood
(eventually being
named an honorary
member of Planned
Parenthood's Board
of Advocates), in
addition to covering
"I'm Just a Bill" as
a duet with Isaac
Hayes on the 1998
Schoolhouse Rocks
the Vote benefit
album. She also
studied briefly with
late Qawwali master
Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan and performed
alongside such
notables as Stevie
Wonder, Melissa
Etheridge, Taj Mahal,
Luciano Pavarotti,
Spearhead, Bob
Dylan, and the
Chieftains.
September 2000
finally saw the
release of Osborne's
next all-new studio
album, titled
Righteous Love,
which failed to
match its
predecessor's
commercial success
and sunk from sight
shortly after
release. ~ Greg

Jesse Harris 8:00 pm

His music can be
described as
jazz/folk, and his
songs are sometimes
in the style of the
early days of
popular jazz. He
began his
professional career
with the group "Once
Blue" co-led with
singer/songwriter
Rebecca Martin and
has recorded with
indie rock groups
such as Bright Eyes,
but is probably best
known for his
songwriting and
guitar contribution
on Norah Jones'
albums Come Away
with Me (for which
he won a 2003 Grammy
Award for the single
"Don't Know Why")
and Feels Like Home.
He has released six
albums in total, two
of which have been
with Verve Records.

Judy Collins 7:00 pm
$100 general
admission
Few singers have the
staying power of
folk icon, Judy
Collins. For nearly
45 illustrious
years, her dulcet
tones have graced
our ears, and her
poetic lyrics have
galvanized a
generation. She has
released more than
40 albums, has had
numerous Top 10
hits, Grammy
nominations and gold
and platinum selling
albums. April 19,
2005 brought the
release of Judy’s
long-awaited new
album, Portrait of
an American Girl,
her first studio
album in eight
years. As has become
one of her
trademarks, Judy has
recorded an eclectic
group of songs for
this album, which
includes personal
songs she has
written on her own,
along with
resounding covers of
such songs as the
Motown hit “Sally Go
‘Round the Roses,”
Train’s “Drops of
Jupiter” and Bruce
Cockburn’s “Pacing
the Cage.” June 2005
welcomes a new book
from Judy, Morning,
Noon and Night:
Living the Creative
Life (Tarcher/Penguin
Putnam). While
sharing her own
experiences in this
self-improvement
book, Judy seeks to
help anyone who
wants to focus on
their creativity and
increase the
productivity and
enjoyment in their
creative projects,
whether it be music,
theater, writing,
craft work,
decorating, cooking,
or anything else
that challenges the
artist in all of us.

Installation: Works
of Michael Dweck
2002 – 2006
Born in Brooklyn,
New York, Michael
Dweck was given his
first Kodak camera
by his parents at
the age of seven.
Having studied fine
arts at Pratt
Institute in
Brooklyn, Dweck
began his career in
advertising. He went
on to become a
highly regarded
Creative Director
who received over 40
international
awards, including
the coveted Gold
Lion at the Cannes
International
Festival. Two of his
long-form television
pieces are part of
the permanent film
collection of The
Museum of Modern Art
in New York. Drawing
inspiration from his
teenage years spent
by the beach on Long
Island, Dweck set
out to
photographically
capture the
vanishing surf
culture of Montauk,
a sleepy fishing
village that in the
1970s became a haven
for East Coast
surfers. Michael
Dweck's
internationally
acclaimed first
book, titled The
End: Montauk, N.Y.
(Harry N. Abrams,
2004), is the
photographic
chronicle and
nostalgic tribute to
that hedonistic surf
community. "The
ultimate homage to
the sun-kissed
surfing life.
Sensuous, seductive
and unbearably sexy
in its effect," in
the words of The New
York Times. His
second book is due
out in Spring 2008.

Hampton
This colonial house,
one of the few still
in its original
position on Main
Street, is owned and
maintained by the
Village of East
Hampton. Lionel
Jackson donated the
property to the
Village of East
Hampton in 1977 for
use as a museum. It
serves as the
headquarters for the
East Hampton
Historical Society
and a period house
museum for the
general public. The
museum features a
display of
furnishings dating
from about 1780 to
1820, typical of the
well-to-do lifestyle
of a post-colonial
East End family.

Clinton Academy, c.
1784 151 Main Street
East Hampton
Clinton Academy was
one of the first
academies in New
York State chartered
by the Board of
Regents. The Academy
was constructed in
1784 with funds
contributed by local
citizens at the
request of the
Reverend Samuel
Buell, pastor of the
East Hampton
Presbyterian
Church. This
remarkable Academy
was a coeducational
institution
preparing young men
for college or for
careers such as
seafaring or
surveying. Young
women were schooled
in spiritual reading
and the finer points
of being a lady.
The first
headmaster, Reverend
Buell, gave
instruction in Latin
as well as Greek and
French. Students
came from a broad
range of places
including Long
Island, New York
City, New Jersey and
Connecticut as well
as from the West
Indies. After the
State dissolved the
chartered academy
system, Clinton
became a community
center, a playhouse,
town offices and
briefly housed "The
East Hampton Star".
This late Georgian
style building was
restored in 1921 by
Mr. Lorenzo E.
Woodhouse. Visitors
can enjoy the wild
flower garden behind
the property
installed by the
Garden Club of East
Hampton. Memorial

Mulford Farm, c.
1680 10 James Lane,
at Montauk Highway,
East Hampton
The Mulford Farm,
listed on the
National Register of
Historic Places, is
considered one of
America's most
significant, intact
English Colonial
farmsteads. The farm
is of interest not
merely because of
its importance to
the history of East
Hampton, but because
of its antiquity.
Viewed as an
artifact which has
been shaped to fit
the needs and the
pleasure of those
who have lived in
it, the house itself
has much to tell us
about the origins of
colonial New England
society and the
changes which still
affect our lives
today. The 1680
Mulford House
represents one of
the most important
and complex
artifacts produced
by our culture - the
family home. The
survival of this
house, built in
1680, is remarkable
since it has been
left largely
unchanged since
1750. The majority
of the framing and
wood members of the
house have been left
undisturbed,
enabling scholars to
tell the story of
the successive
changes over time.
The Mulford Barn,
constructed in 1721,
is one of the most
intact early
eighteenth century
English-plan barn
forms in New York
State and is
recognized as an
outstanding example
of early eighteenth
century construction
methods and
materials. Open

Baymen’s Last Stand:
Photographs by
Michael Cardacino
Former bayman Danny
King’s dory-style
boat, used for haul
seining in Eastern
Long Island, was
boldly painted with
red, white & blue
stripes in 1992 in
protest of newly
enacted government

techniques. These
images celebrate
“The Last Stand”
against the law that
closed the door on a
way of American life
and work.

Matt Weber
Photography Exhibit
through August 7th
Harper's Books is
pleased to announce
its second
exhibition with New
York photographer
Matt Weber. For over
20 years Weber has
prowled the streets
of the city in
search of the next
great shot. He has
become a cult figure
among New York City
photographers and
collectors, having
produced an
unrivaled
contemporary
document of an ever
changing New York,
while cultivating an
instantly
recognizable
aesthetic that
places him among the
most important image
makers of our time.
While our first show
was a retrospective
of Weber's now
iconic New York
images, this
exhibition will
focus on a single
subject: the
reaction of New
Yorkers to the
election of Barack
Obama as President
of the United
States. Weber's
shots of Election
Night jubilation in
Times Square capture
the catharsis of a
city, while his
photographs, taken
on Election Day and
during the
inauguration,
provide a telling
narrative amid the
outpouring of raw
emotion. To
celebrate the
exhibition, Harper's
Books will
co-publish a book of
Weber's Obama
images, available as
a limited edition of
only 150 copies. Our
collaborator on this
project, Sanctuary
Books of New York
City, was the
publisher of Weber's
2004 monograph, "The
Urban Prisoner," and
is currently
producing a
documentary film on
Weber's life and
work. For further
information, contact

Madoo is an artist's
garden- the gardens
of Robert Dash.
Situated on two
acres on the south
shore of eastern
long Island, it was
opened to the public
on July 10, 1993.
Through the years,
the garden has
emerged, creeping
bit by bit towards
the property lines,
always in
transition, its
vital signs
regularly enhanced
by subtle maneuvers.
A few constants are
evident, such as an
unusual and somewhat
radical pruning
technique, a goodly
amount of whimsy,
and a bold use of
color on the outdoor
furnishings, which
are sometimes
repainted to
complement nearby
blooms and foliage.

Sag Harbor Whaling
Museum
200 Main Street Sag
Harbor NY
631-725-0700
During the 19th
century, Sag
Harbor, New
York became one of
the busiest ports in
the northeast, where
whalers of many
nationalities could
be seen walking the
streets. In our
bustling village
young men from small
East End towns often
found work as
whalers, a job that
promised them the
possibility of
earning more money
than they could make
on the farm and the
chance to see places
they had only
dreamed of or heard
about from other
whalers. These young
local men, together
with foreign
whalers, brought
culture and customs,
stories and lore
from distant lands
to Sag Harbor.
During this time
period Sag Harbor
became a truly
international port
town, where diverse
cultures came
together for one
pursuit: the hunt of
the mighty whale.

Swings - Collector’s
Choice: A Group Show
selected by Irwin
Levy
Mood Swings reflects
our perception of
and reaction to all
forms of stimuli.
The thrill of
victory, the agony
of defeat. United we
stand, divided we
fall. Yes, we can…
From Celebration of
Life to Darkness of
Spirit and those
points between. Mood
Swings visits the
place where
invisible barriers
cease to exist.
Because we have a
soul, the Mood
Swings journey ends
there. |

Shinnecock Hills to
Moriches Bay:
Artists of
Remsenberg, Part I
$4 adults / free for
children 17 and
under
The Museum will be
showcasing the work
of Remsenburg area
artists in a series
of two exhibits.
The first exhibit is
called, “Shinnecock
Hills to Moriches
Bay,” and it will
feature the work of
Cheryl Machat
Dorskind and Edward
Batcheller. The
exhibit will begin
on May 16 and
continue through
July 3, 2009. Ms.
Dorskind will be
showing her
handpainted
photographs. In a
misty landscape or
the smiles of
giggling toddlers,
Ms. Dorskind
captures the essence
of our east end
experience. Her
process begins with
original black and
white photographs
which she paints
with transparent
layers of oil paint
creating a poignant
luminosity. Ms.
Dorskind’s
photopaintings have
been published in
newspapers,
magazines, and as
cover art for
best-selling
novels. She has
written two books,
The Art of
Handpainting
Photographs, and The
Art of Photographing
Children. Ms.
Dorskind has taught
at Long Island
University, Suffolk
Community College,
Maine Photo
Workshops, and Guild
Hall. Mr. Batcheller
will be showing
works inspired by
the marsh meadows
surrounding Moriches
Bay where he grew up
exploring coves
teaming with life.
Mr. Batcheller
creates images on
photographic glass
plates using a
method of coating
the glass with a
light sensitive
emulsion. Mr.
Batcheller
superimposes his
glass plate images
to form a layering
of transparent
photographs alluding
to memories and time
spent by the shore.

Have you ever heard
of mead? Have you
ever tried mead?
Maybe you tried mead
while visiting
Europe or at a
medieval festival?
Have you been told
that mead was like
beer, a beer with
honey or even a wine
with honey? Mead has
some similarities to
these beverages, but
it is so much more
it deserves its own
category. Mead is an
alcoholic beverage
made from the
fermentation of
honey as its primary
sugar source and is
often referred to as
honey wine. Being
made from honey, one
would naturally
expect it to be very
sweet and although
it usually is, it
can actually range
from dry to very
sweet. Mead is
usually still,
though it can be
made sparkling and
can range from a
mild low alcoholic
content up to very
high. Mead is
arguably the oldest
alcoholic beverage
on the planet with
some evidence dating
it back
approximately 10,000
years. Due to many
different cultural
and financial
reasons, mead has
fallen out of favor
over the many years
and now we call it
the 'oldest
alcoholic beverage
no one has ever
heard of.' A far
cry from its heyday
when it was referred
to as the 'Nectar of
the Gods.' Mead can
be produced in many
variations including
a plain honey wine
(traditional - honey
only), flavored with
fruit (melomel),
spices (metheglin),
vegetables, or any
combination of
ingredients limited
only by the
imagination of the
wine maker and the
resources he has at
hand.

weekenders gather up
their used and

gear to sell at

it.” Participants

years. Better yet,

sell that beautiful

Meditation with Jim
Owens 8:00 am $20
suggested
contribution
LongHouse Reserve
will offer Sound
Meditation sessions
every Saturday
morning at 8 am from
from May 30 through
August 29. The
sessions consist of
coaching and
exercises to deepen
meditation through
the use of sound.
The session leader,
Jim Owen, is a
landscape designer
who maintains a
daily spiritual
practice. Mr. Owen
propounds the use of
sound vibrations to
foster mental
alignment with the
universe making
meditation a true
pleasure. Mr. Owen
says, "The purpose
of using sound
before meditation is
to allow sound to
align the vibrations
of the human energy
field. Sacred sounds
assist the mind in
turning inward and
focusing on itself."
A member of
LongHouse Reserve's
Garden Committee,
Mr. Owen also
believes in using
sound to enhance the
spiritual dimension
of gardening. The
sessions will be
held by the
Buckminster Fuller
Fly's Eye Dome in
the quiet of the
LongHouse gardens
(indoors in case of
inclement weather).
Attendees should
bring a pillow or
beach chair. |
