Breast Cancer Research Foundation Benefit
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Here at LF, we have always been an avid
supporter of BCRF, raising funds through
in-store events, accepting contributions
(which we always match 100 percent), as well
as from the sale of our exclusive Power of
Now Tee from which 100 percent of the net
proceeds goes to the fight for a cure. The
Breast Cancer Research Foundation's mission
is to one day achieve prevention and find a
cure for breast cancer by providing money
for clinical research. For every dollar
donated at least 85 percent goes directly to
research and awareness programs. We would
like to invite the community to join us as
we feature a fun synergy of the cutest
Spring Collection around, music and food.
Come get a fresh new look from one of our LF
stylists while raising awareness and funds
for this very important cause. Make a
contribution, and you will be entered into a
prize drawing to receive a $250 LF Gift
Certificate. |

Donation: $10 Members; $13 Non-Members; $5
Students.
Can the forces of nature be unified? What
is the nature of dark matter? These are the
questions that physicists from around the
world will explore when the world's largest
and most powerful microscope – the Large
Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European
particle physics
laboratory CERN in Switzerland – begins
colliding protons later this year. It will
provide an unprecedented look at the
universe under
conditions where our current
understanding breaks down and new phenomena
might be observed, and the exciting
connections between
physics at microscopic and astronomical
scales will be explored at the LHC in the
coming years. Speaker: Dr. George Redlinger
is a staff
physicist at Brookhaven National
Laboratory, where he is a member of the
ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron
Collider. When he is not thinking about
supersymmetry and dark matter, he works on
making the paradigm shift from classical to
jazz piano. |

Fri 5/9 Film: The Apostle (1997) 7:00 pm
$5 Parrish Members/$7 Non-Members
Directed by Robert Duvall. Starring
Robert Duvall, Farrah Fawcett, Billy Bob
Thornton. In English. 134 minutes.
Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall plays
Texas preacher Euliss "Sonny" Dewey, who
reacts to his wife’s infidelity by brutally
beating her lover. He leaves town, changes
his name, and relocates to rural Louisiana,
where he resumes preaching as “The Apostle
E.F.” and helps revive an old church.
Duvall used real gospel preachers and extras
carefully selected from parishes of the Deep
South, and the film treats its characters
with nuance and complexity. The San
Francisco Chronicle called the film “a warm,
multifaceted study of a man who’s part
snake-oil salesman, part loving father, part
servant of God and part womanizing
hothead.” Robert Duvall received one of his
six Best Actor nominations for his portrayal
of “Sonny” Dewey.
Fri 5/16 Film: The Secret Life of Words
(2005) 7:00 pm $5 Parrish Members/$7
Non-Members
Directed by Isabel Coixet. Starring Sarah
Polley, Tim Robbins, Julie Christie. In
English. 115 minutes. Hannah, a taciturn
nurse who has survived the war in
Yugoslavia, works in a factory in Britain.
When her supervisor insists she take a
vacation, she travels to Northern Ireland,
where she winds up taking a job as a nurse
on an oil rig. There she tends Josef, a
heroic burn victim. While it captures the
claustrophobic atmosphere of life on an oil
rig, the film focuses on the developing
relationship between the timid,
hearing-impaired Hannah and the critically
injured Josef, and the mysteries of Hannah’s
background that are only gradually revealed. |

Works of Michael Dweck 2002 – 2006
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Michael Dweck
was given his first Kodak camera by his
parents at the age of seven. Having studied
fine arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn,
Dweck began his career in advertising. He
went on to become a highly regarded Creative
Director who received over 40 international
awards, including the coveted Gold Lion at
the Cannes International Festival. Two of
his long-form television pieces are part of
the permanent film collection of The Museum
of Modern Art in New York. Drawing
inspiration from his teenage years spent by
the beach on Long Island, Dweck set out to
photographically capture the vanishing surf
culture of Montauk, a sleepy fishing village
that in the 1970s became a haven for East
Coast surfers. Michael Dweck's
internationally acclaimed first book, titled
The End: Montauk, N.Y. (Harry N. Abrams,
2004), is the photographic chronicle and
nostalgic tribute to that hedonistic surf
community. "The ultimate homage to the
sun-kissed surfing life. Sensuous, seductive
and unbearably sexy in its effect," in the
words of The New York Times. His second book
is due out in Spring 2008. |

EAST HAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY 101 Main
Street, East Hampton 324-6850
Osborn-Jackson House, c. 1740 101 Main
Street, East Hampton
This colonial house, one of the few still
in its original position on Main Street, is
owned and maintained by the Village of East
Hampton. Lionel Jackson donated the property
to the Village of East Hampton in 1977 for
use as a museum. It serves as the
headquarters for the East Hampton Historical
Society and a period house museum for the
general public. The museum features a
display of furnishings dating from about
1780 to 1820, typical of the well-to-do
lifestyle of a post-colonial East End
family. Open year round: Tuesday - Saturday
- Hours 10 to 5 - Admission: $4 adults, $3
seniors, $2 students - Free for members
Clinton Academy, c. 1784 151 Main Street
East Hampton
Clinton Academy was one of the first
academies in New York State chartered by the
Board of Regents. The Academy was
constructed in 1784 with funds contributed
by local citizens at the request of the
Reverend Samuel Buell, pastor of the East
Hampton Presbyterian Church. This
remarkable Academy was a coeducational
institution preparing young men for college
or for careers such as seafaring or
surveying. Young women were schooled in
spiritual reading and the finer points of
being a lady. The first headmaster,
Reverend Buell, gave instruction in Latin as
well as Greek and French. Students came from
a broad range of places including Long
Island, New York City, New Jersey and
Connecticut as well as from the West
Indies. After the State dissolved the
chartered academy system, Clinton became a
community center, a playhouse, town offices
and briefly housed "The East Hampton Star".
This late Georgian style building was
restored in 1921 by Mr. Lorenzo E.
Woodhouse. Visitors can enjoy the wild
flower garden behind the property installed
by the Garden Club of East Hampton. Memorial
Day weekend through Columbus Day, or by
appointment. Admission: $4 adults, $3
seniors, $2 students - Free for members
Mulford Farm, c. 1680 10 James Lane, at
Montauk Highway, East Hampton
The Mulford Farm, listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, is considered
one of America's most significant, intact
English Colonial farmsteads. The farm is of
interest not merely because of its
importance to the history of East Hampton,
but because of its antiquity. Viewed as an
artifact which has been shaped to fit the
needs and the pleasure of those who have
lived in it, the house itself has much to
tell us about the origins of colonial New
England society and the changes which still
affect our lives today. The 1680 Mulford
House represents one of the most important
and complex artifacts produced by our
culture - the family home. The survival of
this house, built in 1680, is remarkable
since it has been left largely unchanged
since 1750. The majority of the framing and
wood members of the house have been left
undisturbed, enabling scholars to tell the
story of the successive changes over time.
The Mulford Barn, constructed in 1721, is
one of the most intact early eighteenth
century English-plan barn forms in New York
State and is recognized as an outstanding
example of early eighteenth century
construction methods and materials. Open

Baymen’s Last Stand: Photographs by
Michael Cardacino
Former bayman Danny King’s dory-style
boat, used for haul seining in Eastern Long
Island, was boldly painted with red, white &
blue stripes in 1992 in protest of newly
enacted government regulations prohibiting
haul seining fishing techniques. These
images celebrate “The Last Stand” against
the law that closed the door on a way of
American life and work.

allows Guild Hall to directly connect with
the artistic community that support and
inspire our arts institution all year long.
Art critic Linda Yablonsky will be the 2008

been organized into two parts due to the
restoration of the John Drew Theater and
less gallery space. However, it means more
opportunity for artists since there will be
two of every prize awarded. Exhibition
organized by Michelle Vertucci, Curatorial
Assistant/Registrar. Linda Yablonsky is an
art critic for Bloomberg News who also
writes for The New York Times, Style
Magazine, Art and Auction, ART News, Elle

Sun 4/6 – Sun 6/22 Paper
Transformed—Origami
Based on an 800-year-old tradition of
paper folding, modern origami has grown into
a highly sophisticated international art
form. Paper Transformed—Origami brings
together nearly one hundred works by some of
the world’s leading contemporary origami
artists and demonstrates the diversity of
technique and wide range of interpretation
possible in origami today. For at least 400
years, the Japanese have been folding paper
for pleasure. Creasing a thousand cranes out
of white paper (the only type originally
available) was thought to bring good luck.
Before 1900, there were rarely more than
thirty folds in origami patterns; now there
may be hundreds—yet only one piece of paper
may be used and it cannot be cut or glued.
Nothing is added and nothing taken away.
Although the advent of computer technology
has expanded the ways in which patterns can
be created today, this is still the essence
of origami. This exhibition will afford
visitors an opportunity not only to admire a
breathtaking expanse of large- and
small-scale works but also to create their
own. Renowned origami expert Florence Temko
has produced several unique folding patterns
for visitors to use in the galleries. Paper
Transformed—Origami has been organized by
Mingei International Museum, San Diego,
California, and will be exhibited for the
first time on the East Coast at the Parrish.
